Science Patio
Frank Malina
Role: Designer / Project Management
Need for outdoor workspace, but make it meaningful! Much thought has gone into designing a new patio space for the scientists on lab. After many research, I landed on Frank Malina’s kinetic artwork as an inspiration to this science patio. He was one of the founders of Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who became the director of the lab and later left the country and became a kinetic artist. One of his artwork titled “Sink and Source” was used as a pattern for the wall panels and the cutouts have been embedded to the concrete floor. This piece gives the JPLers a reminder of our forgotten past and the creativity that’s rooted deeply in JPL’s culture. This was a large group effort from working with scientists, landscape architect, furniture designer, fabrication shop and facilities.
