Deep Space Network
JPL’s Deep Space Network Lobby and Viewing gallery has been redesigned to better represent what goes on in the building.
Before
The previous Mission Control lobby did not reflect the amazing work that goes on inside the control room and update has been long overdue.
Design Phase
We collaborated with an architectural firm, SET Creative, for look & feel and design iterations for the new space. The worm logo was reintroduced at the entrance of the building and custom floor to ceiling LED screens were introduced in the lobby to show glimpse of Deep Space Data we are constantly receiving and sending to our spacecrafts in deep space.
Deep Space Data
Then we worked with Refik Anadol Studios to create data content to be displayed on our custom LED screens. All the public data on deep space missions and satellite images have been archived and used to create visually intriguing content, which shows a glimpse of the work being done in this building.
As you enter the lobby, you’ll hear the subtle sound of custom soundtrack playing in the background. The plucky synths at the very beginning and the rhythmic strings from 19:18 on are based on the morse code rhythm that was sent to Juno Spacecraft and at 2:27, the Sputnik beep can be heard.
